Wild Turkey, 24" x 18" Oil on Canvas

2016 National Wild Turkey Federation's Stamp Print of the Year

“Strutting longbeards are incredible when the sun hits them, and my ultimate goal was to do the bird justice as he shows off his best stuff.”

This is a commissioned oil painting of an Eastern turkey for a couple in Alabama. I had a blast painting this solo strutter lit up by an early morning Alabama sunrise. I stayed loose in the foreground, very loose in the background, and kept the primary focus on the bird. I brought out the palette knife when it came time to lay down some bright highlights in the grass and some areas of solid, bold color throughout the piece. Strutting longbeards are incredible when the sun hits them, and my ultimate goal was to do the bird justice as he shows off his best stuff.
