Wood Duck,  30" x 20” Oil on Canvas

I’ve always been fascinated by Wood Ducks. Not only for their remarkable coloration but also for their speed and the way they whistle through the treetops in the first glimmer of pre-dawn light, often landing on the surface of a creek or marsh right in front of you with a “whoosh” before it’s light enough to even see them. The fall foliage of the woods and creek bottoms they inhabit provide the artist with some vibrant, warm colors to paint. With this piece, I wanted to let the reflection of the water and the floating leaves tell the story of the scene this wood duck pair is in, rather than paint it directly.
