Bobwhite Quail, 20" x 10" Oil on Board

Quail are such an important part of the Southern hunting scene, and there are so much history and culture around the hunt. So for my latest appearance at the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition, I decided to paint this group of quail against a loosely rendered backdrop of native grasses. There’s so much expression in their heads and body postures, I didn't want to detract from that with too much going on in the background. As I often do, I posted this piece on my Instagram page to let my followers comment with titles and then vote for their favorite. They chose “Follow the Leader,” and I think it’s a fitting title. It sold the second day of the show.
