Pheasant, 24" x 16" Oil on Canvas
This trio of pheasants is set against the background of a loosely painted, colorful midwestern fencerow. When working on ringnecks, I like to paint their heads in pure, bold colors with firm edges and then loosen up the brushwork in the background. It gives the painting a strong focal point and the expression on their faces is a natural center of interest. Most of the foreground is painted in bold strokes of solid color laid onto the canvas with a palette knife.
